What is a 503A Pharmacy?
A 503A pharmacy, also known as a traditional compounding pharmacy, is a licensed pharmacy that compounds medications on a patient-specific basis according to a prescription from a licensed practitioner.
These pharmacies operate under Section 503A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which was established by the Drug Quality and Security Act of 2013. 503A pharmacies provide personalized medications that are not commercially available or need to be customized for individual patient needs.

Final Pharmacist Check
A second pharmacist performs a final verification of the prepared medication, checking dosage accuracy, labeling, and packaging.
Prescription Denial Policy
When a Prescription May Be Denied
A prescription may not be approved if:
- Medical history indicates the medication would be unsafe or contraindicated
- Current medications create potential dangerous drug interactions
- Medical condition does not meet clinical criteria for the requested treatment
- Lab results or vital signs indicate treatment would not be appropriate at this time
- Additional medical evaluation or specialist consultation is required first
Refund Policy for Denied Prescriptions
If your prescription is not approved after your consultation, you will receive a refund according to the following terms:
What You'll Receive Back
You will receive a refund of your medication payment, minus any non-refundable fees that have been incurred.
Non-Refundable Professional Fees
The following fees are non-refundable as they cover professional services already rendered:

- • Corporate practice of medicine (CPOM) administrative fees
- • Medical record review and assessment costs
Refund Processing Time
Refunds are typically processed within 5-7 business days after the denial notification. The funds will be returned to your original payment method.

- Complete Recommended Testing: If additional labs or evaluations are needed, these can be completed before reapplying
- Seek In-Person Care: For complex medical conditions, we may recommend establishing care with a local provider

Right to Choose Your Pharmacy
You have the legal right to have your prescription filled at any licensed pharmacy of your choice. While we work with Emerald Compounding Pharmacy for compounded medications, you may request your prescription be sent to another 503A compounding pharmacy if preferred.
Right to Prescription Information
You have the right to receive a copy of your prescription and complete information about your medication, including ingredients, proper storage, potential side effects, and drug interactions.
Right to Ask Questions
You have the right to speak directly with a pharmacist about your medication, ask questions about compounding processes, request information about the pharmacy's accreditation and inspection results, and discuss any concerns about your treatment.
Right to Privacy
Your prescription and health information must be kept confidential. Pharmacies must comply with HIPAA regulations and maintain the privacy of your medical records and prescription history.
Right to Transfer Prescriptions
You have the right to transfer your prescription to a different pharmacy at any time. Contact your current pharmacy to request a prescription transfer, and they must comply with your request in a timely manner.
Right to Report Concerns
If you experience problems with medication quality or pharmacy services, you have the right to report concerns to your state board of pharmacy, the FDA's MedWatch program, or contact our patient support team for assistance.
